Relieving Suffering and Delivering Joy Yutang Lin Worldly entanglements could hardly be cleared out. Comment: We Buddhists often talk about compassion, and yet are incapable of salvaging all sentient beings. Consequently we seem to have rendered such noble ideals into empty terms. In the face of worldly situations how could we be free from haggling and complaining? Activities born of compassion are either to relieve suffering or to deliver joy and happiness. If we could sustain such profound intentions, then in daily life we would have a guideline as to how to respond to situations and beings. Thus, we could save ourselves the sorrow of weighing personal interests and losses, and instead enjoy making altruistic contributions.
