Anecdote about Yogi Chen's fearlessness

Today's anecdote about Yogi Chen's fearlessness brought back memory of another one from Juan Bulnes. So I share it with all of you.

Yutang,

Tthat same year I experienced an even more close call with Yogi Chen at Timber Cove! I am pretty sure the date must have been during the Spring of 1978. In the boat, there was Dave and Yogi Chen and I and my girl friend, who some months later became my first wife. Just the four of us, no Bill, so the incident must have been a different one. I believe that Dave remembers the event quite well.

The sea was somewhat rough. When we were coming back not far from the shore, the engine quit for some reason I don't know. The surf and wind were pushing us against those big rocks on our left (those you see on your right when you stand on the beach looking out to see). I grabbed one oar, and I don't remember whether Dave grabbed the other oar or was trying to restart the engine. If the later was the case, may be I tried to use both oars. But the hinge for the oar broke, so I had to row canoe-style (which is less effective than rowing with a hinge, and then you have to use one oar). The surf had us relatively close to the rocks, I really did not know whether we would be able to evade the crash (and that could be a fatal event of course, even if we did get hurt by the rocks we might have drowned in the cold rough water).

Needless to say I was scared but doing my part as best I could; my girl friend was scared too, but she did not allow fear to take over; Yogi Chen did not seem scared in the least, and I can only guess that he must have been silently praying. David was doing what he could too, and I don't remember for certain how we came out of it: whether it was the case that Dave managed to restart the engine after several tries or whether the two of us managed to row to safety, as we were not far from the shore.  What has remained in my memory is the fact of that close call!  I don't think Yogi Chen made any comments about it, then or after it was over.  May be you can ask Dave about this story when you see him.

Regards,
法安,

Juan
